What are Office Hours?
"Office Hours" are online drop-in sessions to which students from schools with registered classes can bring me their questions about material they're covering in class. They make for a cost-effective way for students to access elite-level subject tutoring and also prepare students for real university office hours, which are similarly structured drop-in sessions with college professors -- an invaluable resource that too many students never learn to tap. Once a school registers a class for office hours with me, all students receive 2 free classes and can purchase additional classes as needed.
Interesting, tell me more...
Often students don't discover the academic elixir that is "office hours" until half-way through college, at their wits end for how to survive a course that sounds like something our of Harry Potter ("Xylomancy" anyone?). Most professors schedule a time each week in which students can drop by their office with questions about material they don't understand. In this more secluded context, professors can address detailed questions there simply isn't always time for in class.
Organic chemistry was my personal "xylomancy". And the day I walked into my professor's office hours, it was like learning the secret handshake that let me into the "successful science students" club. I wished I'd started sooner!
Sometimes I would come into office hours with specific questions I was confused about. Other times I would just go and listen to the questions other kids asked, and it was like someone had done all the work of digesting the material and picking out the trouble spots for me. Eventually, I would even just bring my homework to do quietly in the corner so that the second I hit something confusing I could ask a question right then and there, without having to tear my hair out waiting for a response by email. Before I knew it, I became an efficient organic-chemistry-understanding machine!
These days, I figure, why save the magic of office hours for college? High school math and science can be hard too! And arguably, these foundational courses are the most important time to lock in real understanding that can be built-on for years to come. So I began offering office hours for some of the courses my students have traditionally found most challenging. Once a school registers for office hours, we set an hour each week during which they can drop by my virtual classroom to ask questions about material from class. students can drop in for single session when they hit a challenging topic in class, or they can make weekly office hours a regular part of their weekend routine. Welcome to the magic!
